Armed Forces Reserve Training Center Wilmington, N.C.
This project consisted of the construction of a new 400-member Armed Forces Reserve Center in the vicinity of Wilmington, North Carolina with administrative offices, educational, assembly, library, learning center, vault, weapons simulator, and physical fitness areas for three USAR units. The maintenance shop provides work bays and maintenance administrative support. The project also provided adequate parking space for all military and privately-owned vehicles.
The buildings include a 45,000 square foot (SF) Training Center with Administrative Offices, a 6,800 square feet (SF) OMS, and a 1,500 square feet (SF) Unheated Storage. The AFRC and OMS are permanent construction with compacted aggregate piles, reinforced concrete foundations, concrete floor slabs, wash bay, masonry cavity wall systems, steel superstructure, low slope white EPDM roofs, translucent panels, masonry and metal stud interior walls, HVAC systems, operable partitions, plumbing, and electrical systems. The air conditioning systems’ connected load is estimated at 146 tons. The UHS, and OMS affiliated Wash Bay, are pre-engineered metal building construction with concrete slabs/foundations. Site related work included site clearing, extension of utilities, general site improvements, paving, masonry facility sign, landscaping, and security fencing with sliding gates. Accessibility for the disabled is provided. An existing building that contained asbestos had to be removed. A major portion of the roadways had to be stabilized using GEOFABRIC. In addition, contaminated soil had to be removed and structures containing Asbestos. All were properly addressed and removed from the site. Physical security measures were incorporated into the project including site development standoff distances, and standoff parking areas. Landscaping, berms, and bollards were used to prevent access when standoff distances could not be maintained. The project is designed to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct05) and to meet LEED Silver requirements.
