Smithfield Foods “Ready to Eat” Facility – Kinston, NC
Smithfield Foods, one of the largest food processing companies in the country, located a new “Ready to Eat” meat processing plant (approx 250,000 sf) in Eastern North Carolina. Group III Mgt. was awarded the Earth work, Utilities, Central Utility Plant (18,000 sf), Vehicle Maintenance Area, Office (32,000 sf) Security, Quality Control Lab and Truck Dock area. The project had a very aggressive schedule with design changes occurring weekly. Bullet proof glass was installed throughout the Reception Area and the Security Office. Group III Mgt. and E.S.I. coordinated and worked closely together to maintain progress and incorporate the design changes being requested by the owner into the new work so as not to impact the schedule and budget. Group III Mgt.’s role in the project was critical as the schedule was based on completing Phase I of the site work before the final building drawings were completed.
Group III Mgt. was able to complete the office area and maintain a high degree of quality, while coordinating the task required to allow the construction schedule for the Production Admin. Areas, Central Utility Plant, Security / Q.C. Lab and Vehicle Maintenance portions of the project to be concurrently completed. At one time Group III was managing 80 subcontractors working 2 shifts.
